Twin air scoops near the sides and directly in front of the windshield provided fresh air for the interior of the passenger compartment. The front end of the Buick Centurion Concept was a revolutionary new design with the long hood sloping toward the front and the grille and headlights recessed well behind the bumper, which is an integral part of the body design. Also, the Buick Centurion Concept featured a television camera in the rear to show traffic to the driver via a television screen on the dashboard, replacing the rear view mirror. It featured “wing-type” back fenders, which previewed the styling of the 1959 Chevrolet and Buick. The Buick Centurion Concept was a two-door four-occupants coupe constructed of fibreglass composite with a red upper body, a brushed metallic finish on the lower portion of the body and an all glass “greenhouse” roof. It featured a red and white fiberglass body, airplane like interior design and a full clear 'bubble top' roof. After 20+ years we now live outside Nashville Tennessee. I grew up and lived in Iowa for a good portion of my life before moving to Southern California. More futuristic as in predicting the future, the car had retractable seat belts and bucket seats with headrests. ![]() The top was a popular concept car of the day bubble top. It featured a rear-mounted camera and video screen. The Centurion XP-301 was a featured car at the 1956 GM Motorama. Four bucket seats were provided in the Buick concept at a time when only sports cars had bucket seats. You can see the camera in the center top of the rear. Remember, that this was 1956 and TV’s were not around but far from common in America’s living rooms! The idea of a TV-like screen in your car had to be a mind-blower for middle America. This small video screen provided a rear view from the camera mounted on the rear of the car. It is a gorgeous car and has features that have only shown up on production cars in recent years, 50 too 60 years later. Actually, I have seen it in person several times over the last few years and it blows me away more each time I see it. Honestly, I don’t remember this Buick concept car as well as others. It seemed to straddle the line between the distant future and the next generation of the automobile. The 1956 Buick Centurion ZP-301 Dream Car was radical but yet realistic.
